High Point City, North Carolina
High Point City is located in the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina and it is also the ninth-largest municipality in North Carolina in terms of population. The city is one of the biggest manufacturers of furniture, textiles, and buses in the world, having been labeled as the “Furniture Capital of the World.” The city is also home to the High Point Market, which is the largest furnishings industry in the world with $11.5 million square feet. This trade show has made High Point, “North Carolina’s International City” as it attracts more than 100.000 buyers around the world. The High Point Market currently houses 188 buildings for more than 2,000 exhibitors, representing 110 countries. Up to 10,000 new products are being introduced every year and ten percent of the attendees are international. The success of the High Point Market starts with a small office desk in 1889, and it quickly becomes a popular regional market. Among the furniture that is being exhibited in the market are bedroom suites, dining tables, bed, clocks, mirrors, lightings, recliners, rugs, dinettes, entertainment centers, tabletop and a lot more.
Another important attraction in the area is the High Point Museum which narrates the history of the city through the Scrapbook of History exhibit. Permanent exhibits include High Point’s History, Hall of Commerce. Admission is free, so everyone can take part and enjoy hands-on programs and tours. High Point is also home to United Methodist Church-affiliated High Point University, a private liberal arts university. Established in 1924, the university has experienced growth in student population especially in the postwar period and was eventually ranked sixth among the Southern Comprehensive Undergraduate Colleges. The university offers degrees in Business Administration, Communications, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, English Literature, Home Furnishings Marketing, Global Trade, International Business, Philosophy, Recreation Training and Fitness, Modern Languages, Special Education and a lot more.
Other important attractions in High Point are the High Point Community Theatre which has been presenting American Musicals, dramas, and comedies. One of the most important events being held in the theatre is the North Caroline Shakespeare Festival from September to December. The High Point Public Library boasts 400,000 titles which include books, music recordings, periodicals, newspapers and a lot of other valuable references. The Historic Castle McCulloch Gold Mill which was built in 1832 has evolved from a gold processing center into a special events center. It also includes the Angela Peterson Doll and Miniature Museum which is one of the largest dolls and miniature museums in the south.
